On Oct 30, 2026, Google said it will support a shared "policy token" from the IETF AIPREF working group. Microsoft and OpenAI said they'll honour it, and Anthropic has started implementing it.

User-Agent: __usage_ai-training
Disallow: /

When: Microsoft from Feb 1, 2027; Google in early 2027; OpenAI "in the coming months"; Anthropic no date. It's a draft.

The catch: if you use it and don't explicitly specify Google-Extended, Google treats it as a Google-Extended disallow. That also affects grounding (cited links) in Gemini Apps. Existing company-specific rules keep working, and Google Search rankings aren't affected.

Do this now (free):

Check your current robots.txt.

Decide: protect content, or stay visible in AI answers.

If opting out, add the group above (plus
Allow:
lines for folders you want open).

Make an explicit Google-Extended decision.

Re-check in early 2027.

Are you planning to opt out, or stay open for AI citations?

The question is whether one of them is yours.

On Oct 15, 2026, Google announced that AI Mode and AI Overviews will show more inline links, higher up, plus a test section for official websites on some task queries and wider article carousels. Separately, Search Console's Generative AI performance report (impressions only, no clicks) has been available to all sites since Aug 31, 2026.

The 5 free fixes

Answer first. One or two sentences that directly answer the page's main question, then details.

Question-style headings.
h2
/
h3
that match real searches (use People also ask, Google Trends, your own Search Console queries).

Official pages indexable. Pricing, contact, policies, docs: no stray
noindex
, not blocked in
robots.txt
, check with URL Inspection.

Author + honest dates. Visible byline and
dateModified
that only changes when content changes.

Measure. Compare Generative AI report impressions with the normal Performance report to see if visibility turns into clicks.

# quick status + robots check (free)
curl -sI https://example.com/pricing | head -n 1
curl -s https://example.com/robots.txt

None of this is a guaranteed ranking trick. Google hasn't shared click data for AI features. But these are the basics that make a page easy to quote.
